The orchid has a long and prosperous history. Fossils from these flowers have been found all over the world. These fossils have been dated back to at least pre-historic times. This means that the orchid inhabited the earth alongside the dinosaurs. Today these beautiful flowers are admired by different cultures and in various countries around the world.

In fact, there are many organizations dedicated to orchids across the globe. These organizations, or orchid societies, were established for the purpose of sharing the love of orchids. There are many societies across North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, and Asia. Most of the members of these societies are hobbyists and collectors that grow orchids in greenhouses in their own backyards.

The orchid is a tropical plant. As a result of the flower originating from a tropical location, many people believe that strong heat and humidity are needed for orchids to grow. However, that is just not true. Orchids are a difficult flower to grow, but they prefer cooler temperatures.

Orchids are a tree-dwelling flower. In the tropical locations growing wild, orchids can be seen perched on the high branches of the tree. This raised location allows the plant to receive great light and just the right amount of drainage for it to look its best. At night, orchids prefer a temperature of 55 to 65 degrees.

Orchid greenhouses first appeared in the 1800s. These were introduced as the ideal environment for growing orchids outside of a tropical location. Growing orchids in a greenhouse requires a hobbyist to pay attention to precise conditions and climate. Soil must be the right mixture of minerals. These materials are loose and often consist of fir bark, tree fern, osumda fiber, peat, perlite, and cork. The temperature of the greenhouse cannot be too hot and the orchids only require water once every five to seven days.

There is a selection of products that anyone who wishes to grow orchids needs to have on hand.

• Oil and gas heaters – these are small heaters that help to stabilize the temperature in a greenhouse.
• Sprayers – these can be attached to the ceiling of a greenhouse or handheld. The sprayers keep the plants hydrated and assist in stabilizing the greenhouse environment.
• High pressure washer – it is used to clean and sanitize surfaces in the greenhouse. The washer can use hot or cold water.
• Soil sterilization - is the process in which unwanted materials are removed from soil.
• Fans – these help to control the temperature in the greenhouse.
• Growth regulator – this can be used to regulate the growth of plants and/or insects.
