Whether
a greenhouse already exists or if one is desired, there are many greenhouse
additions that can make them more efficient and productive. One common
upgrade for an existing greenhouse is converting to a hydroponic growing
system which keeps the roots in a constantly flowing nutrient solution
giving plants constant access to air, water and nutrients. This allows
the most productivity in the limited available area.
Since the greenhouse is sealed evaporated water does not escape, keeping
the green house warm and humid. In hot environments useful greenhouse
additions are circulation fans that regulate heat. Greenhouses are especially
useful in cold environments and for growing food out of season, but
may need a heater for especially cold nights.
Other good greenhouse additions are growing lights, such as high pressure
sodium and metal halide lights. These are useful before a plant flowers,
and in extreme latitudes where sunlight is limited. Lights can be used
24/7 to make a plant grow very quick and then when it is at the desired
size the light cycle can be changed to 14 or less hours of light to
allow for the plant to produce fruit, vegetables or flowers.
