Greenhouse Growing

A greenhouse is a great way to improve the value of your property, as well as a great source of fresh produce. Greenhouse growing has been around for centuries and has proved to be an ideal method for maintaining supplies of fruits and vegetables during the winter months. They can be seen in backyards around the world.

The idea of a greenhouse dates back to the ancient Romans. However, greenhouse growing didn’t become practical until the beginning of the 17th century. Originally designed by a French Botanist, these early greenhouses were a way for Europeans to grow tropical plants for medicine and food. They were generally large, bulky buildings; but they were effective.

While greenhouses of past centuries have been primarily the domain of the wealthy and well-to-do, this is not the case today. Greenhouse growing operations can be constructed for relatively little cost and can be easily built in the average backyard. In fact, a small greenhouse can often be built by the homeowner with a little be of planning and the right tools.

There are a wide variety of designs for a backyard greenhouse growing operation. Many of these designs are meant to be very simple to build from very rudimentary materials. These can be ideal for those on a budget and with few gardening goals. However, these are often quite small and don’t allow a lot of room for growing, much less walking around.

For larger greenhouses, there are a number of options. Many greenhouse growing websites offer plans and/or kits for building a more substantial grow room. The advantage of the kits is that they usually ship to your home as a complete package, ready for assembly. Many of these kits only require a rudimentary set of tools in order to build. However, kits are generally much more expensive than supplying the materials yourself.

Successful greenhouse growing depends heavily on the amount of humidity and the amount of heat contained within the greenhouse. Most plants do not require high temperatures, in fact too much heat can be detrimental to many of them. Regulating the temperature and humidity is fairly easy, provided you have a well designed greenhouse.

Depending on the amount of sunlight that your greenhouse receives, ventilation will more than likely be needed. A simple exhaust fan is often enough for a small greenhouse. However, larger greenhouses sometimes require a more elaborate ventilation system. Many greenhouses are designed with roof panels that can be opened and closed as a means of controlling the internal heat.

Maintenance is essential for an effective greenhouse growing operation. Regular hosing down of the walls and floor, along with periodic disinfecting can drastically reduce the amount of insects, thereby improving the health of your plants. Proper watering is also essential, and should only be done when the soil is dry. Overwatering within a greenhouse is a common way to kill your crops.

Greenhouse growing is a popular hobby for some people and an obsession for others. Having access to the freshest possible produce, all year long, is the biggest selling point for most greenhouse gardeners.
